DESTINATION

An Exhibition resulting from the Beaulieu Artist in Residence Project 2005

1st August – 7th September, 87 Bucklers Hard, Beaulieu, Hampshire

This exhibition highlights some of the issues surrounding Tourism. These include the apparently contradictory outcomes: enjoyment/damage, preservation/change.

A carpet of postcards of images of the surrounding attractions covers the exhibition floor. Visitors must walk on the exhibit to enter the gallery, and necessarily cause ‘damage’ to those images over time. During the five week period major damage will be repaired in order to allow the exhibit to function.

Copies of the postcards will be available for sale, as in most tourist destinations. This reflects how tourism enables the upkeep of historic sites, and places of natural beauty. In this case postcard sales will contribute to the printing, repair and invigilation costs.

The paradox of ‘preservation and change’ is further explored by the portraits of people who live and work in the area, at the middle of the postcard carpet. Many of whose way of life and communities have been changed beyond recognition in their lifetimes. By grouping the portraits in the center visitors can avoid walking on them if they so wish. These portrait postcards will not be for sale.

All of the postcard images were created during the residency, and are taken from the artist’s sketchbooks. Some of which are displayed in a case behind glass.
